Docked next to the Queen Mary in the Port of Long Beach, there’s an impressive submarine known as Podvodnaya Lodka B-427 Scorpion. Once owned by the Soviet Navy, the submarine worked with the Russian Pacific Fleet and was used as a diesel-electric attack submarine. A self-guided walk through the submarine provides great insight into what life was like for the Russian soldiers who lived and worked in it. The submarine’s walkways are narrow, its rooms and living spaces are ridiculously claustrophobic, and the mishmash of machinery looks completely incomprehensible. Our walk through the submarine’s body was punctuated by recordings of sonar beeps and the voices of Russian sailors which made us feel like we were in the depths of the sea right along with them.
