The Ruined Garden
Thanks to the green-fingered loving of creator Robert Johnstone the last few years have seen the Ruined Garden bloom into a jungly paradise. A welcome retreat for lunch in the shade on a sunny day, or snuggled up in the red brick dining room to bask in the glow of a roaring wood fire as the days get cooler. Johnstone has long been celebrated locally for his deeply authentic approach to Fassi cooking, and his menu features some hard-to-get traditional dishes like slow, spit roasted lamb mechouia (order a day in advance) and Sephardic chicken and eggs, as well as his reimagining of traditional Fassi street food in the form of his best selling ‘popcorn’ makouda (potato cakes still take pride of place), succulent chicken wings and livers in a delicately spiced onion confit, and earthy berkoula (a foraged green wilted with olive oil and preserved lemons).
