Completed in 2005, the Rooms houses the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Provincial Archives and Museum. Designed in a historicist postmodern style, the Rooms competes with the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist for dominance of the skyline of St. John’s. A major cultural draw for the city, the gallery hosts numerous shows each year, while the museum examines the area’s natural and cultural history, with special focuses on its aboriginal peoples and naval and military history.
