Even the name is brilliant – a tongue in cheek nod to the Grande Dame of the Oxford University Press just round the corner and a whisper that it's a bit rough round the edges. After all, this is Jericho, one of the most interesting and eclectic neighbourhoods in Oxford.
But the slightly down-at-heel appearance is intended – the mismatched tables and chairs, the shelves of obscure, multi-coloured hardcover books - is confidently stating its value within the community as a local's place that can compete with the best of them.
You’ll always get a warm welcome by the efficient and knowledgeable staff and the food is consistently top notch without it being pretentious. Be sure to book a table in the recently upgraded restaurant at the back if you're going at a popular time, but it's in the bar area that you'll pick up the true flavour of Jericho.
