The Music Box Village
4557 N Rampart St, New Orleans, LA 70117, USA
Magic of the musical sortMusic Box Village feels like an encampment created by feral musicians. Surrounded by tall galvanized steel walls like a medieval hill town (albeit set along train tracks in a former industrial area), inside it's dotted with small, ramshackle structures cobbled together of salvaged wood, bits of metal roofing, and lots of whatnot. But here’s the thing: most every building is also a musical instrument. The floorboards of this building act like a piano keyboard. The wire balusters along the stairs of that one are actually an electric harp. And try talking on the phone in the old-school phone booth — your voice stutters loudly with a wild vibrato from the spinning speakers atop. Public hours (check website) allow kids to roam and explore. Ask about the irregular concert schedule, with evenings featuring local talent along with occasional notable visitors, like Norah Jones and Gogol Bordello. Suggested donation during open hours: $12 adults,| $5 for kids age 3 to 12.
