Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg, PA is like entering a book cathedral. Soaring ceilings with a delightful mural depicting activities along the river through the decades.
There’s coffee, of course, and aisles and aisles of finds. There’s even a rare book and manuscript room that you reach by going downstairs, past history books, around a corner and through a tunnel.
Directly across the street is Broad Street Market. Here you can get anything from Fried Oreos to cuisine from Korea or the Balkans. You can also take home some local cheese or grass-fed beef.
Around the corner you can catch an independent or foreign film at Midtown Cinema.
Head four blocks over to walk the promenade along the Susquehanna River. Harrisburg has several lovely bridges that span the river. You’ll past an historic YMCA and many Front St. mansions. If you make it all the way down to Market St., reward yourself by walking over to 3rd St. and getting a scrumptious crepe at Au Bon Lieu.
