The Lion

The Lion, Southland 9679, New Zealand

Another peak along Milford Sound said to have some resemblance to its namesake is the Lion (officially Mount Kimberley). There are three landmark peaks here—Mitre Peak, the Elephant and the Lion—but the inspiration for the name of the Lion is perhaps the hardest one to understand. Whether you can spot the shape of a lion or not, the 1,302-meter-high (4,272-foot-high) peak, which faces the Elephant, is stunning. In the saddle between the two, the dramatic Stirling Falls plunges from a height of 146 meters (479 feet) into the fjord. If you spend some time in the art museums of Auckland before you visit Milford Sound, the Lion may already look familiar—it was a favorite subject of 19th-century painters and photographers, not to mention 21st-century Instagrammers.
