The Kennebunks (as neighbors Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and sometimes Arundel, Maine, are collectively called) most recently became famous as the site of the Bush family’s summer retreat, but the area had served as a summer refuge for wealthy New Englanders for a hundred years before that. The old shipbuilding town transforms in season, hosting visitors with boutiques and lobster shacks and chic sea-to-table bistros. A hike along one of the trails in the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, through shady forests and across salt marshes on boardwalks, will acquaint you with the enduring magic of the southern Maine coast.
