The Independente Suites & Terrace
Following the success of the Independente Hostel & Suites, which epitomized the splashy haute hostel movement that’s swept across Europe in recent years, is this grown-up successor, situated just next door. Instead of towering triple bunk beds and communal bathrooms, expect 18 large private rooms, with an en-suite bathroom in each (complete with a luxe rain shower head and walk-in glass stall). But it hasn’t lost the bohemian spirit of the original: rooms are adorned with old maps, vintage writing desks and funky artwork. Its Insólito restaurant, situated on the rooftop terrace, offers inspired Portuguese dishes—salt cod confit served with green apple batons, for instance—matched with sweeping views of the River Tagus. Another plus: the property’s privileged location just opposite the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, just a few minutes’ walk from Rossio Square.
