Athens is your typical college town. We have a huge campus, 35,000 rowdy students looking to experience all that college offers, and a downtown bar scene just off that campus ready and willing to accommodate them. That was great when I was in law school and didn't go out until 11pm.
However, now, I am 41 and an attorney. My wife is a banker. Where do we go for a libation to sooth the pains of the week? Where do we go to see our friends and begin the weekend? The Globe!
The Globe is a place where the servers are friendly, the beer is cold and varied, the wine selection is deep with servers who take time to help you find the one you want, and the food, well, just try the Globe chips. They may not do much for your fitness but they sure go down will with a glass of wine, or a beer, or a glass of scotch.
Some Fridays, so many friends show up, we cannot find enough chairs. Some Fridays, it is just us. Well the servers are friends now, so we are never alone. Either way, there is always a constant stream of everyone from college kids to professors and professionals. This is THE place where we can all mingle.
One tip: if the weather is nice, get there early for a table out front. The best thing about the Globe is the location and the people watching out front is my favorite Friday pastime. If you hit the curb parallel parking out front, that will be me smirking at the corner table. But, I will guide you in and share a beer with you—there are no pretenses at the Globe.
