In October in Maine, it's mushroom hunting season. Eastern Europeans know what I'm talking about. Bring a bucket, or just hold your shirt out like a plate and fill 'er up, then go home and make sure none of them are poisonous (!) and enjoy!
Eat them fresh or can them for winter enjoyment, either way. The mushroom diversity in the woods of Maine is notable.
A Disclaimer: Don't ask me whether this one shown is edible or not. I just take pictures of them and leave them there for someone else to forage. But I can tell you that if I had an expert or a guidebook to confirm it with, I might well have taken this gorgeous one home and built a meal around it. There were scores of them for the taking!
