Soak up some creative inspiration along with beautiful Southwest Florida nature at the historic winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The two American innovators were good friends who built their winter homes next to each other in Fort Myers. In addition to touring their historic retreats and admiring the period furnishings, you can stroll 20 acres of botanical gardens, visit the Edison Botanic Research Laboratory onsite and ogle antique cars and photographs in the 15,000-square-foot museum.
Some of the more fascinating sights to put on your scavenger hunt in the gardens include huge ficus trees planted by Edison, Ford, and Harvey Firestone in their search for a source of domestic rubber. There's also a striking banyan tree that's among the largest living examples in the continental United States.
