The Devil’s Acre
The antiquated cocktail trend shows no signs of letting up, but we’re glad that with each new opening the concept introduces us to ever more delicious drinks. The Devil’s Acre - named for the historic real estate it occupies along San Francisco’s notoriously wild Barbary Coast - opened in 2014 with its finely-researched apothecary theme. The bar is illuminated by flickering candles, and its “restorative libations” include tonics and alleged hangover cures. The speakeasy vibe goes a step further thanks to the secret underground bar, Remedie - to find it, just walk toward the stairs in the back of the bar (doing this is a safe bet for impressing a new date). This subterranean extension is insanely atmospheric, and serves an extensive drinks menu in a space decorated with antique ephemera.
