The Bookshop is one of the few independent bookstores in Cape Town. I like it because the space is different—think chandelier, huge glass windows, and comfy couches overlooking the street, and a cosy, intimate space downstairs with more couches, armchairs, and yummy cupcakes and tea.
The selection is unusual, with a lot of visual and graphic design and Mervyn, the owner, will order something if they don't have it.
They also host book readings and other interesting events. I love the contrast between the light-filled, goldfish bowl interior upstairs, and the dark, intimate hideaway downstairs.
It has a touch of old world charm, where one can sit in a big armchair with a cup of tea and a slice of cake and lose yourself in stories.
