The Austin State Cemetery is the last resting place of many Civil War veterans including General Albert Sidney Johnston, the highest ranking officer (among both Union and Confederate forces) killed during the war. Johnston's memorial, created by German immigrant sculptor Elizabet Ney, is a lasting tribute to the fallen solider, whose loss was considered by Confederate President Jefferson Davis as a "turning point in our fate." At the State Capitol there are monuments to the soldiers of the Confederacy, Hood's Texas Brigade, and Terry's Texas Rangers (seen here).
