Bali Aga's Art Work
The Bali Aga people are similar to the Amish in America. Most of their communities do not encourage visitors and are religiously and ceremonially unique, but in Tenganan they actively promote tourism and encourage the purchasing of their artwork. Many people are aware that the Bali Aga women weave complicated ceremonial cloths called Double Ikats, but only the men are allowed to carve the Lontar. The lontar books are stories about religion, astronomy, history and moral values that are carved into the leaves of a fan palm in a long and complicated process which may take up to a year or more to complete.
