I was leading a group of gap year students in Ecuador two summers ago, and we spent a few days near the Amazon. We happened to be in the town of Tena during the annual chocolate festival (held every June), and were lucky enough to catch this parade of cacao producers with their fruit. It was particularly unique to see this group of all women marching together since we typically think of farming as a male-dominated industry. I highly recommend a stop in Tena if you are going to Ecuador. We stayed at the Sinchi Warmi center, an eco-hostel run by Kichwa women just outside of Tena. Great food, unique accommodation, and inspiring hosts!
