Temple of the Big Buddha
Wat Phra Yai, or the Temple of the Big Buddha, sits on a small island just off of Koh Samui (and accessible via a causeway) and is an impressive and massively proportioned building, from the fierce emerald dragons guarding the entrance to the monumental gold Buddha statue at the top of a steep staircase. The Buddha is depicted with his left palm facing up and right palm down, signifying a time when he was able to avoid temptation through serene meditation. (As at any holy Buddhist site, remember to wear respectful attire that covers your shoulders and knees.)
