Combine history and a beach day beyond Athens
Well outside Athens, in the southeastern Attica region, in two hours or under you can visit the Ancient Greek site of Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon. Not quite as famous or well-known as that other building on the hill (aka the Parthenon on the Acropolis), Sounio has much the same historic charm — and some stunning sea views. Though there are organized bus trips to Sounio, the easiest way to get here is by car (rent in downtown Athens or Glyfada), in which case you can make a day of it by stopping for a swim and some lunch at one of the beautiful ‘organized’ beaches on the Athens Rivera (organized meaning that umbrellas are available free or at a nominal cost, and food/drink are also on offer). On the drive, you may also want to stop at Lake Vouliagmeni (see related write-up) to bathe in thermal waters.
