Temple of Artemis

Atatürk Mh., Park İçi Yolu No:12, 35920 Selçuk/İzmir, Turkey

The Temple of Artemis was one of the legendary wonders of the ancient world, a vast temple that was 137 meters long, 69 meters wide and 18 meters high. Those were the dimensions of the third temple to stand on the site, completed in the 4th century B.C.E. and which lasted till the 3rd century C.E. After the Goths destroyed the temple, some of its columns ended up being used in the construction of the Hagia Sophia and other buildings in Constantinople. The foundation of the temple was rediscovered in the 19th century and while little remains except for some columns, it is possible to imagine the enormous scale of the original building.
