Temple of Aphaia
Only an hour’s boat ride from Athens is a temple that dates back to the 5th century B.C.E. The Temple of Aphaia, on Aegina, is just as majestic as the Parthenon and Poseidon's temple at Sounion, and provides views of both on a clear day. On a sea-facing hill surrounded by pine forests, the temple is amazingly well preserved: Of the 34 Doric columns, 24 are still standing. The local bus (right across from the ferry dock) to Agia Marina stops at Aphaia. Take a picnic or stop for lunch at Skotadis ouzeri, opposite the fishing boats and floating markets, before you catch the ferry back to Athens. Order katsoules (small fried fish) and a green salad with goat cheese rolled in flaked pistachios, Aegina’s most famous export.
