10% of the world’s tea comes from Sri Lanka - a big number for such a tiny place. Nuwara Eliya is at the center of Sri Lanka’s tea economy, but this former English hill station is also known for stunning landscapes, Pidurutalagala, the country’s tallest mountain (off-limits to visitors, sadly), and proximity to the Horton Plains National Park. Nuwara Eliya is a great place to escape the stiffling heat of the coastlands, and is home to some of Sri Lanka’s most impressive colonial hotels, modern restaurants, and exciting regional cuisine. Still, I love nothing more than hoping on a motor bike, scooting out into the high country, and bumping into the people working on the tea plantations. Many of the plantations offer tours and tastings during the week.
