The Greeks and the Turks both claim to have created Baklava. It doesn't really matter where it's from as its sublimely delicious either way. Tatlıcı Güven, or Güven the Dessert-maker, is famous in Izmit for creating Sütlü Nuriye, a kind of baklava soaked in sugary milk instead of the typical baklava syrup. During the recent Muslim Sacrifice Holiday, I had the privilege of watching swarms of people buy their decadent sweets at Güven's before heading home or to their relatives abode. Nothing says "Holiday" quite like syrup drenched desserts!
