Oysters, Lobsters, & Abalone on the Beach
We kayaked halfway around Australia’s heart-shaped island state in four weeks and almost every night dined off what we caught or pried from the sea. When the tide was low, we would pull over and knife oysters and clams from the coral and bake them over a fire that night. Diving with a licensed fisherman we found three-foot long lobsters and abalone sucking to rocks on the sea floor. Even if you don’t catch your own, every small town has a fresh fish market.
