4o miles into a hot and hilly bicycle ride, seeing the Taos Mesa Brewing Company rising from the land scape, had me worried it was all a mirage. Thankfully, the restaurant, brewery and live music space was the real deal and a place that I can’t wait to visit again, when I’m back in New Mexico. It’s a microbrewery with an impressive kitchen, on a stretch of road where it’s just you, the miles and the beautiful Taos Mesa. They feature hand crafted beer on tap, wine, and have live music and events almost every day of the week. Not to mention the view of those mountains at sunset. The Taos Mesa Brewing Company is a must see, must eat and must drink on your next road trip in New Mexico.

Great Beer in the Middle of the Mesa

We found this brewery on our way back to Taos from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge (which I also recommend!). It feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere, until you get inside. The building itself is interesting, but the people inside are even more so. When we went in the afternoon there was a mixture of young people chatting after a hike or working on their lap-tops, families teaching their children to play pool, and regulars at the bar. At night they often have live music that seems to bring in a crowd of dried up hippies and cowboys that came to Taos and never left. They have good food, great happy hour specials, and really fantastic beer brewed on site.Try the sampler flight and then pick your favorite.

A Required Stop in N. New Mexico

This is just about the best meal you can find in northern New Mexico when you’re tired of red/green chile. ANd this is from someone who was born and raised in New Mexico. They have a fantastic selection of beers and the food epitomizes farm-to-table practices. So make sure you go visit and stay for the band on the slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
