A Taste of Japan Before Birdwatching in the Huachuca MountainsUnless you are a soldier or an avid bird-watcher, you have probably not heard of Sierra Vista. At the base of the Huachuca Mountains in southern Arizona, this unprepossessing town, attached to Fort Huachuca, is not exactly a tourist magnet...But those in the know flock here for the wildlife--the nearby San Pedro valley and Ramsey Canyon offer some of the best scenic birdwatching in North America.
And a good spot for a pre-hike lunch is Tanuki. Family-run, this homey restaurant is an Arizona surprise. The town's residents regularly rank it as one of the best places to eat, and you won't be disappointed. I know--"Sushi in the desert?!" Well, technically, Sierra Vista is not the desert, (it's 'high grassland') and the bounty of the sea is only a few hours' drive away.
After I ordered my chirashi bowl (fresh, and one of the best I've had--seriously), the owner, a friendly Okinawan lady who's lived in AZ for decades, offered us a special not-on-the-menu taste--her home-made octopus-and-cucumber salad topped with seaweed omelet and wasabi-marinated roe. In Sierra Vista! Tombstone is just down the road, but this is a world away from sarsaparilla and saloon steaks...
So, smile and order; you just might be treated to something unexpected too...
