Easygoing and friendly Madaba is Jordan’s most approachable town: small enough to explore completely on foot, packed full of interesting historic sites showcasing mosaics from the Byzantine era, and easily used as a base for jaunts down the King’s Highway or to the Dead Sea. Talal Street (the main road through town) has plenty of local street life along its length with cobbler shops, hole-in-the-wall falafel stalls, bakeries churning out delicious bread spiked with dates, and produce stores peddling live chickens - squawking in cages out front. Once you’ve strolled down Talal Street (popping into St. George’s Church to view the Madaba Map as well, along the way), swing down pedestrianized Prince Hassan Street lined with souvenir shops to browse the modern mosaics on display.
