View from the Top of the World

Soaring more than 1,600 feet into the air, Taipei 101 is one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world and probably Taipei’s most iconic site. For a small fee, visitors can spend time on the observation deck—a large space that offers a 360-degree view of Taipei. From here, you can get a better understanding of the city and how it is organized. For that reason Taipei 101 is the best place to start your sightseeing adventures. There are also a number of great restaurants in Taipei 101 along with shops and entertainment options; you can plan at least half a day of experiences at this one site.

Cocktails on Top of the World

Located on the 85th floor of the massive Taipei 101 skyscraper is a fusion pub known as Diamond Tony’s. With a great selection of drinks and food, it's an ideal setting for businessmen looking for a fun place to take colleagues, or a couple on a romantic date. But the real draw of this panoramic restaurant is the amazing views of Taipei from what was once the tallest skyscraper in the world.

Even though Taipei 101 lost this title in 2010 when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai opened its doors, the skyscraper is no less impressive than the day construction was finished. After your cocktail, head up to the observation level for a 365-degree look at Taipei, with its streets radiating out like spokes in every direction. From 1600 feet up in the air, you not only get amazing views but you get an opportunity to finally understand the city in a way that just isn’t possible on the ground.

The Best Dumplings in Taipei: Din Tai Fung

With its signature dumplings, Din Tai Fung has made a name for itself, spanning 18 locations globally and earning a Michelin star in Hong Kong. Though the Taipei 101 location may be touristy, these “pillows of heaven,” as Anthony Bourdain affectionately referred to them, are worth braving the crowds. The pork xiaolongbao are mandatory for the savory soup inside the dumpling—but also try the chewy, spicy shrimp and pork wonton, and the variety of steamed greens. Don’t forget to take a sneak peek in the glass windows, where you can see the dumplings being made by hand (each one has 18 folds). Over 10,000 of each type of dumpling are made on any given Saturday!
