My Favorite Tainan Snack: Danzai or “Slack Season” Noodles at Tu Hsiao Yueh
Tainan is known for its xiaochi or "small eats" and there are plenty of delicious and cheap snacks in this vibrant city. The standout is the slack season noodles, developed from a century-old recipe and so named because they were sold by a fisherman during a period of rough seas. The sweet minced pork, topped with cilantro and a shrimp, adds great texture to the savory broth and slippery, lightweight noodles. For US$1.50, it’s difficult not to have just one more bowl! Don’t miss the elaborate process of soup-making in the midst of the restaurant bustle.
