Hitting the Racetrack While in Chicago
A couple of hours from Chicago, in amongst the corn fields and past the Western suburbs lies a clay racetrack where a unique form of stock car racing happens all summer long. On a recent Midwestern getaway, I tagged along with some folks making their annual foray to Sycamore Speedway and enjoyed the people watching almost as much as the ups and downs of the races. With groups of "ladies" and guys racing until the final winner is announced, onlookers get an eye-full as neon spray-painted Oldsmobiles and Chevys crash, smoke, and pop tires. At the end of the series of races, a couple of figure eight races were held ensuring that drivers with a death wish had even more opportunity to crash into one another. The most exciting part might have been the audience car races, though. As a sleek Audi smoothly and quietly glided around the track, a Pontiac almost kept pace. And the cars got precariously close to each other causing me to wonder what the owners' insurance agents might think....
