A visit to Swayambhunath, commonly called the monkey temple, was an unplanned highlight of my brief time in Kathmandu. The sights, sounds and smells needed more than the 45 minutes I had to spare in the midst of a full work schedule. I almost thought this denizen of the temple was going to pounce atop my head, but after seemingly considering doing so, it moved on. I will definitely plan a longer visit should I have the opportunity to again travel to Nepal.
A visit to Swayambhunath, the monkey temple, is worth it if for no other reason than to get an exceptional view of Kathmandu spread out before you - it's almost a 360 degree view. Add the uniqueness of the temple grounds and people watching and it is an incredible place to visit.
