The most Floridian experience in Fort Lauderdale, and possibly the whole state, can be found at the Swap Shop. It is both the largest drive-in and largest daily flea market in the world. During the week, the indoor flea market has shops, rides, and a food court. But the real magic happens on the weekend, when vendors come in to take over the whole lot for a Swap Shop (pretty much the same thing as a flea market), selling everything from jewelry to antiques to dishes. The Swap can feel like a foreign bazaar once you start getting deep into the rows of stalls selling more and more peculiar things. Every conversation I had with vendors was quirky, colorful, or informative, and always a treat. At night, the space reverts to a drive-in theater with 14 screens. Over 12 million people visit every year, which is only about five million less than Disney World.
