The Big Guns of Astronomy in South Africa
Visiting the S.A.L.T. observatory was not on my list of things to do. In fact, I didn't know it existed until a member of our group shared about a dozen drinks with a staff member at a bar in Sutherland the night before, a pit stop on our wild journey into the Tankwa Karoo.

Touring the observatory all I could think was 'Bond villain lair'. Set in the remote desert where the night sky is at its darkest, free of light pollution. Book in advance as they do not accept drive-ups.

SALT is the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. This is a must-see for overlanders, star gazers, geeks and desert enthusiasts.
