Vistas are truly more beautiful when you've earned them. Tired to the bone from a 60-mile ride through the hills of northern Maryland, I stopped to snap this photo of the gorgeous countryside. It cannot capture the sweet, wet smell of grassy fields, the refreshing late summer breeze at my back, the triumphant pounding in my chest or the fiery burn in my lungs; but the smile on my sweaty face shows the true joy of bicycle travel. It reminds you to find excitement and pleasure in simplicity: a hot shower, a dry tent, a beautiful view from the top of a long hill.
This was my first multi-day trip by bike. We started in Washington, D.C. and ended in Manhattan.
