Sunset Beach, NC 28468, USA
Stretching Out on Sunset BeachI'm one of the few married men I know who will openly admit he loves to visit his in-laws. The fact is, my wife's parents moved from Long Island to North Carolina shortly before our children were born, and as a golfer and father of two boys, their retirement home has become a welcome sanctuary for me and my family.
If you love the game, you probably know that Myrtle Beach's "Golden Strand" is a mecca for duffers and scratch golfers alike. For dads like me, it's also easy to find a child-friendly golf course that will help your kids learn the game.
Even if you don't want to play with the little ones, you can still get in a round on your own while your spouse takes the kids to the beach.
After all, that's how the Golden Strand got its name—from all the great beaches that line the Atlantic Ocean. Our favorite (and closest to the in-laws) is Sunset Beach. After crossing over the Inner Coastal Waterway, it's only a mile or so to an expansive and picturesque beach, which stretches about 2-3 miles in either direction from the fishing pier that reaches far into the surf from the main town.
The beach is large enough so you'll always have some room to spread out, even during the busiest peak summer months -- and the ocean is almost always warm enough to swim in, which for us Northeasterners, is a welcome treat.
And if you want to enjoy the sunset for which it's named after, don't forget to pack a cooler . . . and camera!
