While skiers may think first of the downhill runs at Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain when they hear Sun Valley, there are also 200 kilometers (or roughly 120 miles) of immaculately groomed Nordic trails throughout the valley. Home to a passionately devoted and fit endurance community Sun Valley is known as Nordic Town USA. The Sun Valley Nordic Ski School was the first full-time cross-country ski school in the country, established in 1970 by Leif Odmark, whose affectionate nickname was “Mr. Sun Valley.” With its long winters and ideal weather conditions, the area has miles of perfectly manicured Nordic ski tracks winding through silent forests and picturesque meadows as if the region were made for life on cross-country skis. The Galena Lodge is a popular day lodge serving warm lunches to Nordic skiers in the winter, and hikers and mountain bikers in the summer.
