In the Guatemalan highlands near Antigua, the town of Sumpango celebrates Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in a unique and colorful manner. Giant Kites up to 50 feet in diameter are displayed in a field adjacent to the cemetery. Structurally made of bamboo and covered with tissue paper, these kites are colorfully decorated and often display a political message. Symbolizing communication between the living and the dead, the smaller kites take to the air in a competition of flight duration and height. I was indeed reminded of my own mortality when one of the kites barely missed me as it crashed into the crowd just a foot away.
