Sugarloaf Mountain

Rio is so packed with spectacular sights that the solid granite Sugarloaf Mountain, whose name comes from the cone-shaped molds once used to store sugar, would be the main highlight anywhere else. An engineering marvel when it was built in 1912, the vertiginous cable car line that climbs the mountain has two sections, and it’s fun to stop midway up at Morro da Urca peak for a caipirinha break. Views from the top stretch from Botafogo Beach below all the way across Guanabara Bay.
