Not far outside of Phnom Penh is the Stung Meanchey Landfill. There is a large community of people living in and off this landfill...sifting through the rubbish in order to find food, shelter and things to recycle for money. I visited this community with a non-profit that brings rice to the children once a day. While there, a little boy (about 4 years old) stepped out of line after receiving his ball of rice and offered me the first bite. Holding the ball up to my lips with his filthy hand, he smiled at me and nodded. My heart broke and I could not refuse. Experiences like these are not often on our "to do" list while traveling - however, it is these moments are the very reason to travel! Stepping into someone else's shoes...world's apart from your own corner....and making a connection.
