Plaza Colón

San Marcos 260, Arica, Región de Arica y Parinacota, Chile

You’ve probably already noticed that most cities and towns in Latin America have a main square, or plaza, and that many of these are named Plaza Colón. Why? Because Christopher Columbus’s name in Spanish was Cristóbal Colón, and many plazas are named for the explorer, controversial as his role in the Americas was. As is the case with most plazas, this one is lined with government offices, a church and businesses; it’s the heart of local life and a great place for people-watching.
