It has always been my dream to visit a Christmas Market in Europe. Instead of getting in the holiday spirit by walking zombie like through the crowded U.S. malls, I wanted to experience a Christmas celebrated outdoors with delicious Alsatian foods and handmade gifts. Originally christened the "Christkindelsmärik" (market of the Infant Jesus), Strasbourg's Marche de Noel is France’s oldest Christmas Market. It comprises 12 different themed markets and is held outdoors in Strasbourg, France, each year from late November until December 31. My favorite food was the flambee tarte which is prepared on a flatbread and heaped with bits of bacon, onions and melted cheese. It is the perfect accompaniment to a mug of beer or a cup of hot mulled wine. You will also want to taste the delicious cookies and tarts that bakers prepare for the holidays.
