Beyond the natural surroundings and scenery, one of the great joys of crossing the strait are the numerous lighthouses – some 41 in all – that breakup the oceanic and mountainous terrain between Punta Dungeness and Cabo del Espiritu Santo. Many are centuries old and have been declared national monuments, including the converted County of Peebles hulk, the world's first four-masted, iron-hulled "full-rig ship," the restored San Isidro lighthouse (now a museum and lodge), and the Evangelistas Lighthouse, located at the western mouth of the strait.
