Tucked in deep on the Tasmanian west coast is my favourite Australian village. Strahan is the only village on a harbour six times bigger than Sydney’s. The friendliness of its people tips the scales at ‘uber-good-natured’. The beauty of Macquarie Harbour, which changes from black to green to bruised to silver to rouge, will take your breath away. A boat ride will take you into the onyx waters of World Heritage listed Gordon River, where you’ll be swallowed by the mist and enlightened by the beauty of the western wilderness. The Sarah Island ruins offer a glimpse of a pine-felling convict past pre-dating Port Arthur. Fishing farms illustrate today’s industry and, along with tourism, form the lifeblood of this tiny 800-strong community. Restaurants showcase Tasmanian produce in all it’s glory in this magic part of the world.
