Explore the cobbled streets of Stone Town
Easy as it would be to spend an entire trip to Zanzibar lazing around on soft sandy beaches, it’s well worth skipping an hour or two of sunbathing to see Stone Town. With its narrow cobbled streets, intricately carved front doors and array of alley cats slinking past your ankles, Stone Town has a charm that you’ll find in few places on earth. Historically, Stone Town was a flourishing capital for the spice and slave trade, which attracted businessmen from across the globe. They bought with them their different architectural styles as they settled, creating a unique blend of Arabic, Persian, Indian and European architecture in the city. Exploring the market where locals still barter for goods, and seeing in the sunset at one of the many rooftop bars are excellent ways to spend the day.
