Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite mountain that rises from an otherwise low-level area. It is over 1,800 feet high at its summit and more than 5 miles around. Visitors can hike up the trail or take the tram to the top for a view of the surrounding area.
While it is an impressive attraction purely for geology, it's the bas relief of Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson that gets the most attention. It was also on this site in 1915 that there was a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan.
The mountain is surrounded by Stone Mountain Theme Park, a family-friendly attraction that boasts a water park, scenic railroad, golf course, restaurants and the famous laser show projected onto the mountain.
