When it comes to road trips, many times the back ways are the best ways—full of hidden gems that you would never otherwise see from car windows flying down the interstate. One such drive in Texas consists of taking the back roads, namely Highway 281, from Wichita Falls down to Austin or San Antonio. The scenery is peaceful, filled with pastures of green grass, scenic vistas and some charming towns along the way, like Stephenville (whose courthouse is seen here), Marble Falls and Johnson City. If you’re looking for a fun and filling challenge, skip breakfast that morning and take a barbecue road trip down Highway 281. With good spots in Marble Falls, Spicewood, Johnson City, Blanco, and San Marcos, amongst others, you can do your own “Taste of Texas” tour.
