St. Michael's Cathedral
240 Lincoln St, Sitka, AK 99835, USA
St. Michael's CathedralLasting vestiges of the era when Russia controlled Alaska can be seen at St. Michael’s Cathedral, topped by a classic onion dome in the Russian style. This National Historic Landmark was originally built in the 1840s, but fire ravaged it in the 1960s, and what stands today is a reconstruction. Visitors should not only admire the striking exterior but also enter the church and view the icons that adorn the walls. The most notable of these is Our Lady of Sitka, a portrait of the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus by Vladimir Borovikovsky.
