I’m not a sunset fanatic, but when the sun settles in for the evenings in Africa the sky turns colors I’ve never seen anywhere else on the planet – crimson reds, blazing oranges, flamingo pinks.
One particularly exquisite sunset I witnessed occurred in Spitzkopf, a stone formation that sprouts from the flat desert plain in Namibia. Here, there are no hotels or restaurants. In fact, there is no evidence of human existence for miles around. Just vast savannah and the Spitzkopf looming in the distance.
To best experience the sky in all its glory, you need to camp out. So, we decided to do just that. Once we found a suitable site, we pitched our tents, and then settled in to watch the sun make its way under the horizon.
When the days are long as they were when we happened to visit, the sky stays bright long after the sun actually sets. And if there’s the right mixture of cloud formation you have the recipe for a truly magical light show.
