Perhaps you remember the Chrysler commercial from Super Bowl 2011 that announced Detroit's comeback. I'll admit that it piqued my interest in Motor City and decided to pay a visit (and hoped that the images from RoboCop were just that—fiction).
I was pleasantly surprised by the progress Motown has made, despite media reports about the the decline of the city. The Detroit Institute of Art is probably one of the best museums in the country. Its collection includes the Diego Rivera mural in the Chrysler commercial that embodies the "spirit" of this city. Hitsville, U.S.A. pays homage to Motown and its roots as a delightful museum not far from downtown. Many hotels have gone through extensive renovations and I found myself waiting for a seat at the well-known Slow's Bar-B-Q. Even the Eastern Market brought many families from all over the Detroit —this was the real Detroit.
Yes, there were rundown buildings and areas that had been abandoned, but I applaud Detroit's fight. We're all rooting for you, Detroit. Welcome back.
