Covering 35 counties throughout East Texas, the Forest Trail includes five state forests, a National Preserve, and the largest cypress grove in the world. Often called the “Gateway to Texas,” those who passed through here include Spanish and French explorers, Anglo settlers, and Caddo Indians. It is also home to a portion of the most important trails from the Spanish and Mexican period of Texas’s history, the El Camino Real de Los Tejas—follow its entire length to its southern end and you’ll arrive in Mexico City.
